I had this problem, and it was fixed by doing this [1], that is, using
alsamixer, muting the second volume "S/PDIF" (highlight it and press M).
That is, if the digital out is not muted, analog is muted (??). Had
fallen back to crappy integrated audio for months on 10.04, until it
happened once agai
This bug report was marked as Incomplete and has not had any updated

Hello,
I've got the same bug as Piotr.
When I start the PC after a long time power off, I've got no sound in Ubuntu
Karmic.
If I reboot the PC, the sound is back.
I compared the dmesg output, and when I've got any sound, I see the following
message :

Please notice that your Audigy is the second card. You may need to
adjust your preferred output device in the Sound Preferences applet.
More importantly, however, note that the Master mixer control for your
Audigy is zeroed:

After upgrading to 9.10 I swapped sound cards, since the old one somehow
didn't record any sound. No I can't hear any sound as well.
