I am also affected by this. Another addition to what Mathieu said:
Sometimes the window manager disappears and appears again, similar as in
windows when explorer.exe crashes.

I have the same problem (mutter uses sometimes 100% and freeze my computer)
with 10.10 release, here is my config :

I have just tried the beta of Ubuntu netbook on a couple of netbooks and
it is completely unusable. It starts out well but within five minutes
or so clicking on things causes long periods of disk activity before
anything happens. Looking with top mutter is comsuming CPU when

I get a similar behaviour although not as extreme as Rob.
Mutter takes up to 400 Megabyte of RAM and has spikes in CPU-Usage for up to
90% for no apparent reason.
