The original report is indeed the same as bug #435352 (fix released) as
commented by Jordi Sellares (#19).
Most of the comments here seem to be related to another problem that
does affects me too. I have just reported a new bug (bug #564459) that
hopefully would describe the bug more precisely.

Also on an MSI Wind 100 (branded as Advent in the UK, but the same
machine in every respect), with the final release of Karmic, regularly
updated. USB works sporadically, rebooting and updating grub sometimes
seems to work, sometimes doesn't.

Booting with the usb mouse plugged in makes it work perfectly, even if
unplugged and replugged, even after suspend to ram or hibernate.

did a fresh installation on my Acer Extensa 4630Z Laptop and it would
not detect/mount usb storage devices (eg. USB drive, External hard-drive
etc) but the other usb devices work fine! The devices show-up in the
disk utility but give "No Media Detected" message. Restarting udev would
solve the prob

Blacklisting the uvcvideo driver in /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf makes
USB usable again (but does not fix webcam).

Sorry, seems I have a busted usb portweird, though, since devices
showed up in dmesg and lsusb (just not with nautilus), until 2nd testing
finally reported problems.

My usb 2.0 is on a separate pci card. Worked for drives Ok for a while
in Karmic(thought unable to empty trash)..Jaunty OK. Karmic wont
recognise canon PSa1000 (OK in jaunty). Unplugged camera, plugged in usb

off ISO image. No USB peripherals detected (mouse, USB stick, USB CD

and i thought I was alone!.. You have described my problems exactly USB
devices and webcam issues. I was on the verge of wiping the hard drive
and starting from scratch... sometimes the devices work (especially if I
downgrade to an earlier kernel e.g. .11 - but next reboot they have
stopped working

I have the same problem on my MSI Wind U100. My Ubuntu is up-to-date but
it's impossible for me to mount my usb key... It's really annoying.

Some add-on info : The USB peripherial (usually a key) is sometimes
recognized, and sometimes not. In the latter case, it doesn't show up in
lsusb.
After it is plugged in, mounted, unmounted and plugged out, it never
gets recognized again when plugged back in.
