Thanks, Rob for clarification. I noticed mine acting like this: it will
sometimes say "authentication error", then "network error" immediately
following. But usually it's the "network error". I have tried my user
name with and without "@yahoo.com", which works for you? The Empathy
does show up
To elaborate:
a) Netbook running Karmic - connects to Yahoo! first time
b) Laptop running Karmic - does not connect to Yahoo! first time, but if I
disable then re-enable the protocol, it connects second time.

I can confirm that at this time empathy will not connect, or even allow
you to create either a yahoo, icq or aol. It was working for me
previously but after the last update from the empathy ppa, it said there
was an error with my yahoo and aol accounts. so i deleted the accounts
and when i tried
I tried it in Karmic, and it still doesn't work. I can't believe you
would close the thread because one person got it to work?! There's
thousands of us with the same problem, Karmic or no. FIX YOUR SOFTWARE
