As there are so few people here I am guessing that it would not effect a
new install but the problem has persisted after my upgrade to 10.10. I
will maybe do a fresh install of

This sounds very similar to an issue I have had for six months now.
Whenever I restart Ubuntu the "gnome alsa mixer" master volume control
is muted. I have to open that optional package and unmute the sound to
proceed. I have to do it from every restart!
When I boot in to kubuntu sound works fine
If this is still reproducible in Lucid, it's a Pulse issue.
