This sounds very similar to an issue I have had for six months now. Whenever I restart Ubuntu the "gnome alsa mixer" master volume control is muted. I have to open that optional package and unmute the sound to proceed. I have to do it from every restart!
When I boot in to kubuntu sound works fine with no extra steps. Ubuntu needs the volume unmuted. I am using Intel HDA Optical output on my intel G45 mobo and this problem started after upgrading to 9.10 and now persists when running 10.04 beta. -- no sound until optional gnome-alsamixer umuted ambiguous devices https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/410360 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
