This is happening to me too. I tried to burn some vids to vcd for my
wife but I couldn't because of this same bug.
Schily, how can I change the backend?, I'm very interested in cdrtools.

Comment #6 is not related to the other comments, but it is easy to fix:
Just use working backend software like:
ftp://ftp.berlios.de/pub/cdrecord/alpha/
http://cdrecord.berlios.de/
Note that wodim does not properly support to write DVDs as the working DVD
code from the original cdrecord sour
