Comment #6 is not related to the other comments, but it is easy to fix: Just use working backend software like:
ftp://ftp.berlios.de/pub/cdrecord/alpha/ http://cdrecord.berlios.de/ Note that wodim does not properly support to write DVDs as the working DVD code from the original cdrecord sources was removed and replaced with different but half-baken code.
