Thanks rockfx01. I had tried a variant (different order but same lines)
of that with no luck. But after going to System > Sound and hitting
test, it seems to work now.

Andrew, this sounds similar to bug #326896. Can you try the following
and let me know if it resolves the issue:
1. Open a terminal window and type "sudo gedit /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf"
2. Add the following three lines to the bottom of the file:
options snd slots=snd-hda-intel
options snd-hd
this was a fresh install, I'd rather not do another fresh install again.

I had a similar issue that occurred after going from 8.04 to 8.10 and
continued into 9.04. The only way i fixed it was with a complete wipe
and clean install. I tried everything on ubuntuforums.org. After a
clean install the sound worked flawlessly. I also use Intel HDA driver.
