I also have exactly the same error with a brand new Goodmans 1GB mp3
player that I have bought so I don't think this can be put down to
hardware problems (especially as it works flawlessly under Windows XP) ?

Have a similar problem when I start the computer after having used a USB
memory stick the previous time (and unmounted it before removing it).
In these cases Ubuntu sometimes stops loading and drops to a terminal screen.
