Have a similar problem when I start the computer after having used a USB memory stick the previous time (and unmounted it before removing it).
In these cases Ubuntu sometimes stops loading and drops to a terminal screen. It gives a number of error messages about 10 seconds apart regarding USB port errors. Each line ends in " error -110".
