I have the same thing here - running the command from within a gnome
terminal. If i go to a text terminal (with ctrl-alt-F6) and run the
command "sudo /etc/init.d/gdm restart" then it works perfectly. Probably
it can't kill itself.
How can i 'detach' this command from gnome so it can finish proper

the issue there is probably not in the init script but rather gdm not
starting correctly
