@Niel, thanks for the CLI tip. However, the key is spelled with a "z",
i.e. no_maximize. For example,

Thank you for this post.. I thought I was going mad.

I'm not entirely sure this is relevant, but my problem seems relative.
I'm running UNR 10.04 on an Asus EeePC-1005HA after a completely fresh
install. When I try to use gconf-editor to exclude my terminal, I get a
"key not writable" error. When I maneuver my way to ~/.gconf/apps, there

I also find this very annoying. Nice to read that it is possible to make
maximus not start up on boot, but that seems to break my netbook-launcher which
doesn´t show up anymore. Even if I launch it from the terminal it doesn´t show
up.
The reason I use netbook-launcher is not because I have a ve
Rustle, if you have space in your screen to have four terminals, you
should be using non-UNR ubuntu.
It is very helpful in small screens, in large screens not that much,
that's how things work. I doubt it is making any users run away. Most
netbook distros use this interface precisily because the e

Rustle, thank God you wrote so expressively about this! I had no idea
what to even call this interface design-flaw. But your description was
articulate enough that I could find this page via a search string in
Google. Ah! some netbooks have enough screen resolution that we don't

This is a screenshot of the removal of maximus from a live session using
the daily UNR desktop CD from karmic.
The "ubuntu-netbook-remix" metapackage is just an empty package with
dependencies on what we believe defines UNR. In itself it doesn't add
any file or functionality, so you can remove it

In support of Loic's point, the design goal of UNR is specifically to
encourage full-screen use of the set of apps that work well on UNR, so
Maximus is absolutely part of the preferred UNR experience.
Experts, as Loic describes, have the option of customizing UNR to their
liking. I would encourag

Surely _THAT_ is a bug and it calls out to be fixed... Or, are the
maintainers so arrogant that they ignore the general dislike of maximus
and impose their elite view of the world on the users?

Sorry, the metapackage is here to pull exactly what's required for the
UNR experience, and it just does. You're free to remove the metapackage
and its depends should remain installed. That is, you can remove
ubuntu-netbook-remix and maximus and keep the rest (netbook-launcher,
etc.).

This bug is frustrating to users and is driving many away from UNR to
other distros. It is confirmed across all platforms I have tested.
Maximus needs to be optional and _NOT_ be installed by default.
