Same problem with dell 420 and 620. However, it does kinda work, but I
have to press like 1000 times if I want to improve brightness just a
tad..

Hm, ok. The driver backs off because the generic acpi backlight driver is
there. Question: under /proc/acpi/video, is there an LCD device with supported
backlight control. What happens when writing values there directly? (also post
"grep -r . /proc/acpi/video" for reference).

I have added the requested option to /etc/modprobe.d/sony.conf and
rebooted the laptop. You will find the output of the dmesg command

Here are some of the results from running the hotkeys troubleshooting
wiki page:
1. xev does not detect any keypress events for the brightness keys
2. none of the input devices seem to return anything for the brightness keys
3. even the 'AT Translated Set 2 keyboard' product, which returns events
