Hm, ok. The driver backs off because the generic acpi backlight driver is 
there. Question: under /proc/acpi/video, is there an LCD device with supported 
backlight control. What happens when writing values there directly? (also post 
"grep -r . /proc/acpi/video" for reference).
If control there does not work, what happens when using "acpi_backlight=vendor" 
on the grub line?
