Same problem with dell 420 and 620. However, it does kinda work, but I
have to press like 1000 times if I want to improve brightness just a

Hm, ok. The driver backs off because the generic acpi backlight driver is
there. Question: under /proc/acpi/video, is there an LCD device with supported
backlight control. What happens when writing values there directly? (also post
"grep -r . /proc/acpi/video" for reference).

I have added the requested option to /etc/modprobe.d/sony.conf and
rebooted the laptop. You will find the output of the dmesg command

I'm running the lastest updates as of today for Jaunty on a Sony
VGN-Z540 and the brightness buttons don't seem to have any effect. For
your information, some of the other Fn buttons such as the volume work
just fine.
