That is exatly the point of this bug... the UNWANTED plugin takes precedence
over USER DEFINED preference
and further more, it does so every time you update acroread (every time
acroread is updated, the plugin needs to be disabled manually)...
the correct bugfix in my opinion would be

Unfortunately, plugins have preference over the setting you refer to, so
the acroread Firefox plugin takes over before this setting is even
checked. You'll need to actually disable the plugin if you would like
firefox to open a handler instead.

I'm also seeing this, but on intrepid.
And, argh!
I looked in Edit->Preferences->Applications, and when the behaviour for
PDF states "always ask" and the damn thing didn't obey that I gave up my
first efforts...
Btw, the main reason I want to disable it is that my firefox always
crashes when lef
Well I feel ridiculous, I didn't even think to check there. Thanks for
the information. Disabling the plugin does return the behavior to
normal.
Now that I know how to revert to the old behavior, I'm OK with the bug
being closed if needed.

I agree that it is a very unwanted behaviour by acrobat, so I will still
consider it a bug...
it is however easy to disable the plugin in [Tools --> Add-ons -->
Plugins]
about:plugins reveals that the guilty file is nppdf.so
