The exact same thing happened to me too in Ubuntu Karmic. Changing the
audio driver from alsa to pulse solved the problem.

Ah, I experienced that problem too, but only after installing ubuntu-
desktop (because of the installation of pulseaudio). After that, alsa
doesn't work properly with smplayer/mplayer. Setting the audio output to
oss or pulse fixed the problem, although I uninstalled pulseaudio, which
makes alsa to
I discovered that this is a audio output problem. In Kubuntu 9.04
default audio driver in KDE is alsa, but smplayer and e.g. flash player
default is pulseaudio. After I change audio output in KDE to pulseaudio
everything work fine. So it is not a smplayer bug - can be close.

You should provide at least the mplayer log (options->view logs) after
trying to play a file.

Correction. I was wrong saying the movie is got rewind to the end. The

I have the same problem here except I use GNOME. It looks like movie is
suddenly got rewind to the end. That is what OSD shows.
The workaround is to rewind once. After that the movie continues from the
start. Mplayer works fine.
