Ah, I experienced that problem too, but only after installing ubuntu- desktop (because of the installation of pulseaudio). After that, alsa doesn't work properly with smplayer/mplayer. Setting the audio output to oss or pulse fixed the problem, although I uninstalled pulseaudio, which makes alsa to work again.
