This bug can be fixed in Jaunty by using Rhythmbox to sync songs with
your Walkman, that's what I'm doing at the moment until Karmic comes

I have the same problem with Sony NWZ-A628 but I did want to use the MTP
protocol because of label managing and so killing hald wasn't my chosen
solution.
I solved the problem installing the plugin for support for MTP devices
in RhythmBox (pay attention not to have it installed with that for iPod
I thought I'd just tell you about the workaround I'm now using until the
real fix.
Using a workaround previously discussed, I have put a line entry in my
fstab:
/dev/sdb1 /media/disk vfatuser,noauto 0 0
I created a folder:
sudo mkdir /media/disk
sudo chmod 777 /media/disk
Then I hav

Yes that is what I see to.
Of course, as there is no Nautilus access and Rhythmbox dos not support
video, there is no way to get videos onto my nice new MP4 player.
Is there no way to revert Jaunty to plain old USB access until this
issue with MTP access is fixed.

1) If i connect the player without Rhythmbox already running it is mounted but

Just thought I'd confirm I see the same symptoms too. My player is a
Sony NWZ-A829 and I'm running Jaunty on a Dell Vostro 1510 laptop.
Exactly the same symptoms as previously described - player automounts
but no access to files - Nautilus reports same error as reported at

i reinstalled the complete gvfs package then the applet worked again until i
plugged in the mp3 player.

This time I have a possibly working fix, which is too easy to be true: just
install "usbmount".
You then get two drives: /media/WALKMAN and gphoto2://[usb:002,013]/

Seems gvfsd is the culprit - killing it stopped my Samsung YZ5 being

I got the same problem with Sony MP3 Player sony nwz a829.
The "solution" is just a workaround.
The device is not correctly mounted. I tried to mount it a several times after
about 5 tryings
the device was mounted correctly.

Sorry! The strange thing is that it worked for me that specific day
(5-5), but now I also returned to my original gphoto2.monitor.

Tried Vincent's fix and it makes no difference, I still have to kill
gvfs-gphoto2-volume-monitor and re-attach the walkman to get nautilus to

I found a temporary solution:
1) Plug in walkman and let it connect and automatically mount.
2) Open System Monitor and terminate the process "gvfs-gphoto2-volume-
monitor"
3) The walkman will disappear from the list of mounted devices. Unplug
it, then plug it back in again and let it automatica
When will this be fixed? It's quite a major problem as many people use
Sony MP3 players... the whole world doesn't run on apple, you know. I'd
quite like to add some songs to my MP3 player for a roadtrip that's
coming up.

I would also like to add that I have the same problem with my Sony NWZ-
S616F Walkman. I connect it, it recognizes it and mounts it, but

Plugging in -> nautilus empty, rhythmbox shows nothing,
gvfs-photo2-volume-monitor is running.
Killing the gvfs-photo2 process unmounts the device.

I have just updated to Jaunty + latest updates. When I attached my Sony
Walkman it mounts my device as gphoto2 device with label `Sony Corp.
Walkman` instead of mass storage device which was the default behaviour
in `Intrepid`.

Problem remains for my NWZ-A728 (I called it a A720 earlier my mistake)
When you try to open it in nautilus, it comes up blank, with the option
to open in Rhythmbox. Nautilus reports it as having '0 items, Free
space: 1.3GB'. The device is 8GB with lots of music files. I wonder if

I can confirm the bug with Sony NWZ-A828. It also crashes the drive-
applet in some cases, but that's another bug.
In Ubuntu 8.10 the device connected via normal USB (it was shown such in
the screen). In 9.04 the device connects via MTP. That's why the
temporary solution by Jack Bakunin works well
