Ah, after updating my system everything is fine. No hang-time when
loading desktop, visual effects are smooth and snappy and everything is

Okay, so after disabling visual effects ting are a lot smoother, but I
still get that "hang-time" after logging in, where the computer just
stops for several seconds while apparently waiting for something, I don'
know if it is bluetooth, network manager or something completely
different. I tried us
Well, both Hardy and Intrepid were faster in daily use with visual
effects enabled, and I thought Jaunty was optimized for speed on weaker
units such as netbooks and should thus improve performance on older
laptops too?

First of all, since you say your card is old you probably shouldn't use
the effects when you want a fast desktop. Second, consider if you need
all the services (SYSTEM -> CONFIGURATION -> SERVICES) and uncheck those
not needed. You could also check what thing start up when you start your
session.
