It is an intractable problem for me. I have a ThinkPad Z60m and have had no
sound at all since "upgrading" from 8.10 to 9.04, though I do have it when
running the live CD. Here's the output of asoundconf list: ~$ asoundconf list

This is a non-issue in karmic, as the notifier hint has been removed
from alsa-lib, and the asoundconf tool has been removed from alsa-utils.

worked fine in Ubuntu 8.04. When I did the upgrade to 8.10 I lost my
sound-capture. When I tried to fix the problem, I've lost all sound.

I woke up to the same notification today. I installed Kubuntu 9.04
alpha6 fresh and have over the last couple days. So I had not done any
special sound installations at all, just the standard updates.
At least the commands worked without sudo :-)

I received the same warning today in KDE, exactly as the original poster
noted.
As with the original poster, I found the directions unclear, and had to
use the asoundconf list command, which was not in the warning, to find
out the name of the sound card, and then re-run the command with that
