Hi, I have the same problem with my HP 6730s. Pressing Fn/F7 Fn/F8, the icon on the screen goes up and down, but brightness doesn't change. I noticed that the brightness value in /proc/acpi/video/GFX0/DD04/brightness changes when I press these combination of buttons. I installed Ubuntu 8.10 64b

if I blacklist video module: - brightness hotkeys and gnome-applet work but in a strange way... more or less as U wrote before. - I can't restore brightness if I set it to lower value - if I set brightness to max value LCD brightness isn't at 100%. So it's better with video module NOT blackliste

I think we need more info on your hardware. Mine works almost perfectly: the screen brightness increases or decreases as wanted, but the popup notification is late to update the progress bar, and after a few increases/decrease, it get so confused it stops updating, and even stay visible for a l
