Thank you Steve, as you said, /etc/shadow doesn't have $1$ or $6$.
It contains few alphabets followed by colon and numbers (sorry I'm new to
linux).
I changed the password using passwd
but still /etc/shadow contains the same characters. (alphabets and
numbers).

related bug 51551, which caused crypt(3) passwords to be used. Assuming
you've applied the security update for

or shadow file, rather than the default MD5 password hash. See the
manpages for passwd(5) and shadow(5).
