I'm going to mark this as Fix Released since I am no longer seeing this
problem on Jaunty. I don't know what fixed it, but am glad it is
resolved.

Actually, *usually* when you see X consuming a lot of CPU, it's not
actually X... X is a server, so is simply responding to commands driven
by some client program. So almost always the bug is something the
client is doing wrong, and forcing the X server to do a bunch of extra
work.

Actually, 'c' above is wrong. I disabled compiz this morning by going to
System/Preferences/Appearance/Visual Effects and now Xorg has no
problems running 'netstat -atuvpnec' in a terminal.

Also, booting the Hardy live CD, I don't see this problem either (I used
'while /bin/true ; do ls -l /etc ; sleep 1 ; done' to generate more
output since netstat didn't have too much on the live cd).

I meant to mention:
a) running the same netstat command in a console works fine
b) new users are also affected by it
c) enabling or disabling compiz has no affect
d) using different themes has no affect
e) doing the same thing on another Jaunty system (64-bit with Intel graphics)
