I consider this inability to open an URL in an already running profile

This is a very big issue here. We're moving away from Firefox to Opera
and Chromium because of it.
When someone a) logs in, b) leaves with the Ubuntu computer "locked"
and then c) someone turns off the computer at the end of the day/week,
the .parentlock and lock reside on the NFS.

Being unable to open a browser window doesn't impede using the browser??

I have the same issue on 10.04 Lucid. And have had this problem for a LONG time.
Why is the severity of this issue not raised previously. It REALLY annoying to
have to killall firefox firefox-bin everytime firefox is to be restarted.

I fear we now have at least two bugs in this one report.
1 Firefox not releasing a lock, and thus blocking a new instance. In this case,
no amount of waiting or starting new instances will solve the problem, just
drastic methods like restarting the computer will.
2 Firefox releasing a lock after
At the moment this is anecdotal, but I have experienced this problem

You make Firefox create a new profile, then move all old contents to the new
one. This most probably removes a "lock file". When Firefox starts, it notes in
the profile "this one is already in use", so a new Firefox process doesn't
corrupt that profile by using it twice at the same time. You're
