after some more investigation, I found out, that
1) the problem only occurs when hald is started from within kde4 (not
from gnome or xfce), not when it is running on a virtual terminal like tty1.
2) actually the system doesn't freeze, but knotify4 blocks the whole

that's unlikely to be a HAL issue, but a kernel issue instead. Are you
running this from within Gnome/KDE? If so, could you please try running
