I have this same problem, which arose after my laptop suddenly died during
updates.

sudo has no effect.
gksudo says that no --configure option exists.

The silliness (or ignorance) is with me, not your question.
I had not added sudo as a prefix. I've now tried and it works fine as you
suggested and update manager is installing new updates. As you'll
understand I'm fairly new to Linux.

This may sound like a really silly question, but did you run "sudo dpkg
--configure -a"? (It won't work without sudo). Could you please do this
and post any messages which appear in the terminal.
