The silliness (or ignorance) is with me, not your question.
I had not added sudo as a prefix. I've now tried and it works fine as you  
suggested and update manager is installing new updates. As you'll  
understand I'm fairly new to Linux.

P.S. The problem with update manager was probably caused by that the  
upgrade to Intrepid was not completed properly. To one of the last  
questions during install whether or not I wanted to keep the original boot  
menu or not I selected "exit to new shell" upon which the installation  
hung itself.
