I did the following and got sound:
sudo killall pulseaudio
sudo alsa force-reload
System>Preferences>Sound and change everything to ALSA
Nonetheless, I have to do it every time I turn on the computer.

On hardy heron I had a similar problem: there was no sound after upgrading
modules, but in that case the system didn't recognise the soundcard. I found
the solution here:

I have the same trouble on my dell 1525, also with 82801H soundcard, as
I updated to Ubuntu intrepid. I ran alsamixer and there was a loud noise
when I turned on the Analog loopback.

(Master, PCM, Front, Sorround, Center, LFE)

I had no sound recently in intrepid. I thought my sound was muted as has
