On hardy heron I had a similar problem: there was no sound after upgrading modules, but in that case the system didn't recognise the soundcard. I found the solution here: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=948528&highlight=lost+sound+dell+1525 (on Gaudentius post) However, now it ain't possible to follow directions, because there is no old modem driver.
