i continued digging through that bug report. someone suggested pulseaudio might be responsible for the erratic record. killing pulseaudio did solve the erratic counter problem. and restarting it with pulseaudio -D did recreate the problem. when restaring in non-daemon mode, the following messag

I did go through the first two pages you mention, this is where i got the alsa diagnostics link. But most of the guidelines are for malfunctionning sound output, which is not really my problem. Besides the sound card seems to be detected and listed correctly by aplay -l. if there is any other dia
