I did go through the first two pages you mention, this is where i got the alsa diagnostics link. But most of the guidelines are for malfunctionning sound output, which is not really my problem. Besides the sound card seems to be detected and listed correctly by aplay -l. if there is any other diagnostic i may do please tell me :)
As for the previous situation on Hardy, model=vaio got the internal mic working, but not the jack (more a workaround than anything - the jack only worked back in 7.10) . note that i did not use the upgrade process to get to 7.10->8.04, but a fresh install. on the contrary, i used the update manager for 8.04->8.10.
