I just found https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Wacom which suggests that
the tablet is working but most input devices are enabled. I was to tired
to test whether the alternative manual setup works, will do so this
evening.

I have the same problem, but I want to add the following observation:
in the output of xsetpointer -l, the wacom graphire3 tablet shows up as
xextensionkeyboard. It should be an xextensionpointer (I think).

I do have to use nvidia-xconfig. If i create a "blank" xorg.conf with
`sudo dpkg-reconfigure -phigh xserver-xorg` and restart the xserver, i
get a black screen. I hear the login drums, but my screen stay

should not be used. Try resetting the X config again (sudo dpkg-
reconfigure -phigh xserver-xorg) and install the nvidia drivers through
System > Administration > Hardware Drivers or by installing nvidia-
