I think nvidia-xconfig is depreciated with the latest nvidia drivers and should not be used. Try resetting the X config again (sudo dpkg- reconfigure -phigh xserver-xorg) and install the nvidia drivers through System > Administration > Hardware Drivers or by installing nvidia- glx-177 (sudo apt-get install nvidia-glx-177).
