It has been deduced that the bug is not in the gdm, but instead with
xorg. It seems to be when a window is painted. Although cursors and
window frames do not seem to crash the system.

I have the same problem on i386. I try to restart X, but xauth says "is only
read system " and then "error in locking authority file
/home/user/.Xautohority".
I think that problem is the Ati drivers :-(.

I have not posted for a while because I was waiting for the release. I
have just put the 8.10 release live cd in the drive and started the
installer and it has done the same thing. Obviously the installer does
not use the gdm, instead just an application in X so I think we can
presume the bug is
that's not likely due to a gdm bug no, rather an xorg issue, do you have
anything creating load on the box before the crash?

I Ctrl-Alt-F2'd into a terminal to stop it crashing on boot. Then I re-
started the gdm. The system locked up again, but I was able to gain ssh
access for about 20 seconds before it because unresponsive. There was
no message
there is no interesting information in the log, what about syslog?

I can reproduce this on every boot. All I did was install hardy
mythbuntu then perform a dist upgrade to intrepid. I am using built in
intel graphics. If I can provide any more information please let me
know. Using the intrepid beta live cd for mythbuntu it loads the
desktop but the mouse moves
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu
better. Please answer these questions:
* Is this reproducible?
* If so, what specific steps should we take to recreate this bug?
This will help us to find and resolve the problem.

I've found out that while the 'X' is on the screen (i.e. it's loading
the login window) if you Ctrl-Alt-F2 to a terminal then the system
remains responsive.
If you then Ctrl-Alt-F7 back to the X screen you just get a black screen
and can't get to a terminal again, but pressing the power button

I think I may be experiencing the same thing on i386. I just upgraded
Mythbuntu to 8.10 and after a restart the first part of the gdm is
displayed then before the entire screen has rendered the kernel crashes
out.
I can only get into a terminal using the recovery mode, there do not
