I've found out that while the 'X' is on the screen (i.e. it's loading
the login window) if you Ctrl-Alt-F2 to a terminal then the system
remains responsive.

If you then Ctrl-Alt-F7 back to the X screen you just get a black screen
and can't get to a terminal again, but pressing the power button
actually shuts down the computer properly.

Don't know if this helps pin-point the issue... I presume it's something
to do with the login graphics or something like that?
