I did a bios upgrade from A09 to A13 (I think it's 13). Now it seems to
work flawlessly.

I have been able to login via sshd and get a dmesg.
Nothing seems unusual is there anything else that I can do that
might help narrow this down?

That sounds totally different to what I experience.
The backlight doesn't even come back on for me. There is literally
nothing on the screen as if it was never on.

I suppose I ran into the same problem with kubuntu intrepid. After resuming
from disk, the screen is totally black - except the cursor. However, when I
move the cursor, it changes its appearance (cursor, hand, arrow, depending on
the widget under the cursor). I think all applications are alive.
Yes. I intend to. It may be 48 hours away at the very least.
