I suppose I ran into the same problem with kubuntu intrepid. After resuming
from disk, the screen is totally black - except the cursor. However, when I
move the cursor, it changes its appearance (cursor, hand, arrow, depending on
the widget under the cursor). I think all applications are alive. I can switch
to a terminal and back (wont help though) etc.. Pressing ctrl-alt-L locks the
screen, i.e. I see some desktop wall paper - still no password widget is
visible. I can enter the password anyway and everything is black again -_-
Pressing ctrl-alt-delete followed by enter, logs me off KDE and the normal
log-in screen is shown again - including all widgets. At some time during the
logoff process, I can see some windows again, for a short time.

Graphics board
01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: nVidia Corporation GeForce 8600 GT (rev a1)
Jockey-KDE shows nvidia driver version 177.

I'll attach my dmesg output - anything else you could need?
