I have a Targa Traveller 826, which is built from the same barebone as
the MSI Megabook M635. The problem reported by the original reporter was
fixed in Dapper.
JoostWestra et al. You folks have seem to different hardware. Please
check the output of "demidecode|less" in order to verify if you real
fix is not yet solved.

It is still a problem in Dapper and Edgy knot3.
I've tried changing all the switches, but that makes no difference. Here

I'm sorry, but my "External Amplifier" switch was turned off. I'm not
sure why though, I can't remember ever touching that setting.
Turning it on made sound work again.

Yes, I have this problem in edgy beta. I had it working before in
dapper.
I have a Dell Inspiron 6000 and lspci tells me this about my sound card:
00:1e.2 Multimedia audio controller: Intel Corporation
82801FB/FBM/FR/FW/FRW (ICH6 Family) AC'97 Audio Controller (rev 03)
When I boot a dapper live
I also attach an archive of my /proc/asound directory
