I couldnt find those exact packages in synpatic but I have installed
debug packages as far as possible for those following searches in
synaptic. I have not installed any non default dictionaries - the
localisation is all default for my selected Sydney Australia location in
ubiquity.

the issue is an enchant one in this log, could you install
libglib2.0-0-dbgsym libenchant1c2a-dbgsym libgtk2.0-0-dbgsym and get a
new log? it seems to be trying to use a directory which is probably not
available, do you have dictionnaries installed? does installing one
makes a difference?

There was a few things I wasnt sure about with the 20080917.1 test
install. What I've since done is to do a complete fresh install with
formatting on Alpha 6 to be sure this is a real bug. Upon installing the
system and gnome-xchat, exactly the same bug occurs with gnome-xchat
vanishing from view b
Thanks Sebastien :) Ok, so when I run it in valgrind the GUI does
appear, albeit slowly as expected. I get the following:
