Pedro looked at it and found that nautilus and gnome-panel couldn't be
started. That was because nautilus, gnome-panel, ubuntu-desktop and a
few more were removed from my system. So I'm marking this as a dupli
seems that my problem was caused by gnome-session not being installed
(don't know how!). I issued 'sudo apt-get install gnome-session' and it
installed it again, now everything seems fine.

Downgrading to gnome-session 2.23.90 didn't help.
gdm works fine, and I've tried logging into a different user without
success.
