Pedro looked at it and found that nautilus and gnome-panel couldn't be
started. That was because nautilus, gnome-panel, ubuntu-desktop and a
few more were removed from my system. So I'm marking this as a duplicate
of bug 219444, which talks about update-manager removing packages.
