I tested this again with Ubuntu Jaunty Beta and the new nvidia driver,
but the brightness problem still exists. The FN keys now work, but they
still do not adjust the screen brightness.

I did find a link to temporarily fix to my problem. See

manually adjust the brightness by clicking an applet on the top panel.
However, it still doesn't work with the built-in Gnome Power Manager. I

I have Ubuntu 8.10 installed on a Sony Vaio VGN-FW11ZU laptop.
It is not possible to adjust the brightness using the function keys <->
(dim) or <+> (brighten).
