Unfortunately I don't know when it was fixed as it's not actually
something that I need to do anymore (not sharing a computer). Just
tested it yesterday to make sure it wasn't still a problem after
receiving an email notifying me the bug had been close (or rejected).
Since it works now I thought
so latest upload of thunderbird fixed this?

Seems to work now, though by default gksu uses gksudo, so you have to
specify -w on the command line ( or --su-mode ) for it to work.
gksu -w -u mozilla-thunderbird
and then enter the password for whatever user you substitute for
