One more thing I remember (if anyone ever runs into this problem again
and happens to stumble upon this report) - the problem temporarily went
away when I didn't log out of Gnome properly (but used CTRL-ALT-
Backspace for example). The next time I logged out of Gnome properly,
the problem returned.
Okay, too bad I wasn't able to give you the proper information to tackle
this bug and taking measures to prevent this bug from ever occurring
again with anybody. My 'fix' was when I finally decided to re-install my
entire machine a couple of weeks ago (not just because of this issue),
and up until

As I mentioned in the initial bugreport, this problem does not seem to
affect other users on the system. So I guess the only thing I can do to
permanently rid myself of this problem is removing all of my settings or
create a new account and start using that one?
The thing I hate most about this pr
did you try using a stock user configuration? no real idea but you seem
to be the only one to have the issue, could be a non standard package
that you installed too

I tried renaming .gnome2 to .gnome2.old and then logging in again.
Nothing seemed to have changed, the problem is still there. Anything
else I can try?

One day later - the problem's back again. Will try removing .gnome2 now,
perhaps that 'fixes' something.

Well, seems like I 'solved' the problem by deleting the entire top panel
and re-creating it from scratch. After logging out and back in again,
the notification area worked as normal again. Of course, this is just a
workaround and not a real solution to whatever was causing this problem.

no idea about what could do that though, you can try to move .gnome2
away and see if that fixes the issue, etc

Of course I have some applications installed which are not in the
standard installation, but I hadn't installed any new apps some time
before this problem started.
As stated in my initial bugreport, I'm not experiencing this bug when
logging in to a different account. So yes, this problem is most
did you install something which is not in the standard installation? do
you have the same issue using an another user account the same box? you

Well that's the funny part - I never changed anything from the default
Ubuntu settings when it comes to the notification area. What I did try
when this problem had occurred several times, is to remove the
notification area and then re-add it to the panel. This didn't solve the
problem.

there is nothing about the issue in the log, that's not weird since the
issue seems to be that the notification area is not working correctly
but applets are, is the notification area correctly set on the gnome-
panel when you get the bug?

Sebastian, thanks for your reply. I'm using Ubuntu 8.04.1, with all
updates installed. I've attached .xsession-errors. The notification area
is just the Ubuntu default in the upper right corner, left of the clock.
It's kind of weird that the Volume Control applet doesn't seem to be

thank you for your bug report, what ubuntu version do you use? could you
attach your .xsession-errors when getting the issue? do you have a
