Sorry, I have to add some (new) information:
I strongly believe that, at least in my case, the problem is due to
not-accessible network printers.
More precisely, if the dialog box tries to display information on a
not-reachable printer, the program freezes for several seconds.

(remote) one, because when I am at office everything works as expected (default
printer is the server shared one) and when I am at home FF freezes. But I may

editing your profile's prefs.js files is the same as twiddling with
about:config but you can search and replace and make the job less painful..

I managed to fix this problem in my setup (reported in https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/firefox/+bug/291073";>bug
#291073). Try going into the FF config by entering about:config in
the URL field. From there delete all references to printers. Worked for
me.
