launchpad, the original reporter states a resolution has been found, and
there has been no activity on this bug since July.

Ubuntu 8.04 cursor stops moving when key pres
After more googling, I found the solution. The root cause is the package
mouseemu which is automatically activated on Apple laptops (1 button on
trackpad).
The trick is to edit /etc/default/mouseemu, uncomment "TYPING_BLOCK..."
and change "300" to "0".
