Oh-kay now.
When my problem popped up, I was unable to update, upgrade, or anything
of the sort. Adept and synaptic both failed to start, and apt-get
commands terminated with errors. Errors included the phrase The package
lists or status file could not be parsed or opened.

Related issue to qa-hardy desktop, Douglas Green and Michael Vogt is am
confronted with the following issue:
Synaptic Downloader reports:

This is an old, known, upstream issue. The reason for the limit is to
prevent the cache from getting so large that it crowds out more
important files on whatever partition /var is on. The Debian developers
tend to be very conservative and figure that it's better to have a low
limit and protect low
I was also just hit by that. Why is there a need at all to have such a
fixed limit for apt?
