I am unable to reproduce this in Hardy.
Since you have already purged gnumeric once, could you run "gconftool-2
--recursive-unset /apps/gnumeric" in the terminal to remove all of the settings
for gnumeric. It will still run, just without past settings. Report back if
that helped or not.

I managed to restart the machine but it did not help. Than I purged all
the gnumeric packages including their dependencies. Installed only
gnumeric (and its dependencies, nothing extra) and it worked! I could
see the chart selection. Than I added the doc and plugin packages and
the problem returned
